The study of physics consists of the two parts pre-diploma (two years) and main diploma (three years). Both parts are finished with oral examinations. At the end of the study, the student specialises in a particular field of interest. It requires research work in experimental or theoretical physics lasting about one year. The degree Diplom-Physiker is obtained after finishing the diploma thesis.
Courses and lectures usually end with examinations at the end of each term. The following marks are given in examinations:

The language for teaching is usually German. However, more and more lectures in the main diploma are given in English. The number of courses given in English is further increasing due to the Bologna process and the introduction of Bachelor and Master studies.
The number of study beginners in physics is still increasing. In 2006 we have counted 60? new students.

The Department of Physics of the University of Potsdam offers in every semester several courses in English. The number of such courses is changing, depending on the generally offered courses. Most of the actually German courses will be switched to English as far as foreign students attend.
